Interview and Collection Review: Sydney-Based Watch Lover and Photographer Haoming Wang
A devoted watch enthusiast who joyfully united his two greatest passions
A few years ago, a mutual friend introduced me to Haoming Wang, a Sydney-based watch photographer. Though my friend isn’t into watches herself, she insisted I connect with Haoming. Sharing a deep love for watches, we soon became online pals.
Haoming’s Instagram account, @h.m.uhren, is the best watch photography account in my opinion. Each post is a stunning work of art, showcasing intricate details of dials and movements. Haoming typically shares only one image per post—sometimes two—reflecting his exceptionally high standards. He only posts the very best.
Born in 1985, Haoming moved with his family from China to Singapore, where he lived for five years before settling in Sydney, Australia. His interest in photography began in 2007, and he soon acquired his first Leica camera. Through dedication and hard work, he established himself as a top-tier photographer, featured on Leica’s blog in 2014.
However, Haoming’s love for watches dates back even further, to 2002, when he was still a teenager. In 2014, he began exploring watch photography, combining his two passions. Today, he is the first Australian member of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) and an FHH Watch Specialist.
As a full-time photographer, Haoming excels in various styles, including street, product, landscape, and architecture photography. While his Instagram focuses exclusively on watch photography, his personal website, Haomingwang.photos, showcases the full breadth of his talent and intriguing portfolio.
During a recent trip to Sydney, I finally had the pleasure of meeting Haoming in person. Over coffee in the CBD, we shared our watch journeys, losing track of time. Haoming then suggested we visit a nearby Vacheron Constantin boutique. It was a delightful experience exploring the watches on display. Unsurprisingly, Haoming is a regular there, and the boutique staff know him well.
I was eager to learn more about Haoming’s personal watch collection, but we ran out of time. That’s when it struck me: why not write an interview and mini collection review for this newsletter? And here we are.

Questions & Answers by Haoming
Question: What inspired or led you to start photographing watches?
Photography and watches have always been my passions. I started experimenting with watch photography around 2014.
Question: With your extensive experience across numerous brands and watches, which are your favorite brands to photograph?
I enjoy photographing any watch that I find aesthetically pleasing, rich in detail, and full of character. It's the combination of design, craftsmanship, and the story behind the timepiece that truly inspires me.
Question: Based on your macro-shooting experience, which top three brands excel in movement finishing?
It's difficult for me to narrow it down to just three specific brands because many brands achieve finishing at a similarly high level, albeit with distinct styles and nuances. Forcing a choice of three feels a bit unfair, as it overlooks the individuality and artistry each brand brings to their movements.
I prefer to analyze specific watch models to evaluate their finishing. This approach allows for a more detailed and accurate discussion of the craftsmanship and techniques applied to each piece, rather than generalizing by brand.
Question: Could you share the camera gears you use for watch photography?
I previously used the Leica CL paired with the Leica Macro-Elmar-TL 60mm f/2.8 for watch photography. Currently, I’ve upgraded to the Leica SL3, which offers enhanced capabilities for capturing the intricate details and textures of timepieces.
Question: If you could share one piece of advice with our readers on how to take better watch photos, what would it be?
My advice would be to experiment with different shots and take your time to prepare a solid concept before shooting. Planning the composition, lighting, and angles in advance can make a significant difference in capturing the beauty and character of the watch.
Question: What are your thoughts on the booming independent watchmaking space?
I think it’s a wonderful development for the watchmaking industry. It brings diversity and innovation to the field while attracting more people to appreciate fine watchmaking. Independent watch brands also serve as a valuable reference for traditional big brands, helping them better understand the evolving needs and preferences of their customers.
Question: Do you believe there are too many watch brands in the market today, including traditional, indie, and micro brands?
Every brand exists for a reason. While some may not appeal to you or me personally, they each have their specific audience and customer base. This diversity is what makes the watch industry so vibrant and dynamic.
Question: What is your personal philosophy, strategy, or approach to watch collecting?
Collecting watches is a deeply personal journey and a reflection of one’s taste and experiences. When I first got into watches in 2002, I was drawn to sports models. However, over time, my preferences have shifted toward classic designs, especially those with exceptional craftsmanship. That said, Metiers d'Art and Grand Complications have always been my favorites, though my appreciation for them often remains limited to admiration due to financial constraints.
If someone buys watches purely with the intention of making a profit, I wouldn’t consider them a true collector. I don’t oppose selling watches, as every collector goes through a process of learning and trial and error. However, true collecting should come from passion, not profit.
Haoming’s Watch Collection
These watches were selected by Haoming for this mini-review. All the photos were taken by him, of course. What a treat for all of us!
Rolex No Date Submariner Ref 114060
This iconic diver from the Crown is Haoming’s first luxury watch, which he purchased in 2013. It still looks brand new in the picture, even after more than a decade.
From the Qantas airplane model, Leica camera, passport page, and world map, we can safely guess that this watch has accompanied the owner on numerous trips. What a fantastic choice for a young man ready to explore the world!
Vacheron Constantin Overseas 4500V Blue Dial
Another fantastic choice here is this sporty steel watch with a slim profile, a striking blue dial, a stunning movement, and perhaps the best interchangeable strap system. The Geneva Seal guarantees the highest level of craftsmanship for both the case and movement finishing. This Overseas model, now in its third generation, has truly stood the test of time.
Seiko x Sarah Àlainn 10th Anniversary Watch
Sarah Àlainn was born in Australia and grew up in Sydney. Her mother is a Japanese musician, and her father is a Malaysian-born diplomat. She attended the University of Tokyo as an exchange student and later returned to pursue a singing career. She has achieved great success, becoming a well-known singer, violinist, and composer.

To celebrate the 10th anniversary of her debut as an artist, Sarah Àlainn collaborated with Seiko in 2022 to produce a limited-edition watch for her fans. It is a beautiful timepiece featuring a violin motif on the dial and a musical symbol at 10 o’clock. The counterweight of the seconds hand is shaped like a violin, and the brown dial is complemented by a vivid red strap.
As a loyal fan of Sarah Àlainn and a watch enthusiast, Haoming was determined to acquire this Japanese-market exclusive timepiece. If you have ever tried to order an OTSUKA LOTEC from outside Japan, you would know the challenges. Yet, Haoming managed to secure one, with the watches selling out in just two days. Haoming’s picture exquisitely captures the beauty of this special timepiece.
JLC Reverso Tribute Monoface Ref Q713842J with Custom Engraving
Jaeger-LeCoultre offers bespoke engraving services for Reverso watches, allowing for the creation of unique and personal designs. The engraving is typically hidden and only reveals itself when the watch is flipped over, thanks to the Reverso’s ingenious mechanism.
Haoming first commissioned an original drawing from an artist in Sydney, then worked closely with the JLC Manufacture to create the engraving based on the artwork. Who is the enchanting violinist in the engraving? You might have guessed it—Haoming’s favorite artist, none other than Sarah Àlainn. What an extraordinary and unique timepiece!
Vacheron Constantin Historiques Triple Calendar 1942 Ref 3100V/000A-B426
Haoming was wearing this watch when we met up in Sydney’s CBD, and it looked elegant and classic on his wrist. This triple calendar is a faithful yet modern re-edition of a 1942 model. There are two variations of this watch, with the date, day, and month displayed in either red or blue. Haoming owns the blue version, as seen in the picture.
This exquisite manual-wind timepiece, with its vintage vibe, was first released in 2017 and was discontinued about a year ago. Due to its limited production, it has become quite collectible. Moreover, it truly reflects the refined taste of the wearer.
In addition to these five watches, Haoming also owns a Breguet Classique 5157 and a Vacheron Constantin Traditionnelle manual-winding three-hand watch, showcasing his love for classic designs and exceptional craftsmanship.
Conclusions
To be honest, I’m envious of Haoming’s outstanding photography skills and exquisite taste in watches. He has a remarkable ability to capture horological wonders, bringing them to life with magical lighting and intriguing backgrounds. His photos are simply to die for.
